It’s getting a little bit like an overcrowded Monopoly board in Surrey at the moment as developers fight for hotel rights and building approvals.

The latest addition would see golfers in Hersham facing one of the most challenging sand traps in the sport's history, as plans for a five-star boutique hotel and luxury spa at Hersham Golf Club were submitted yesterday. The £72m development (pictured) on green belt land would feature 198 rooms and a luxury spa.

If passed, it would be the latest in a long line of hotels to be approved in Surrey, following planning permission for a boutique hotel at Moore Place and expansion of Sandown Lodge, both in Esher, and a much fought over new hotel at the Jolly Boatman site opposite Hampton Court Palace in East Molesey.

That’s before you start mentioning some of the offerings that have already sprung up recently: the Holiday Inn Express at Epsom Downs, Lingfield Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club and Brooklands Hotel in Weybridge.
