A pint of beer or a glass of wine could soon be enough to put you over the drink driver limit in Scotland as tougher new drink-drive laws are introduced

Ministers in Scotland have approved a stricter drink-drive limit by lowering the legal level of alcohol from 80mg of alcohol per 100 mls of blood to 50mg. England and Wales retains its current level of 80mg, but could this bring about a change?

Drivers crossing the border into Scotland will face the unusual possibility that having consumed in England an amount of alcohol that would not put them over the limit, may have exceeded the limit when driving into a different part of the UK.

This represents a significant departure from the norn where traditionally laws across the UK have been very similar.

The decision brings Scotland into line with France, Germany and Spain where the limit is 50mg. The change could come into effect later this year.

So...drive in France and pack a breathalyser kit. Drive in Scotland and watch even closer what you drink.
